An art project "Sacred Space" is held in Lviv each year from 2012 in the period of Great Lent and Easter. The project consists of visual and musical parts, as well as lectures and discussions. Art works are represented in different forms of contemporary art: installation, video, performance, objects. Artists represent a new look at the sense of sacred/spiritual art.
The interest towards a sacral art increases during the last years. This art becomes more and more popular. Numerous expeditions are holding, many iconographic planners and master classes are being organized, schools and study groups are opening, galleries appears and so on. At the same time we may see that the understanding of sacral art essence becomes more simplified. We may see an artistry invention reduction and creative process narrowing to minimal interpretation and old shapes operation. It leads a meaning exchange in art creation evaluation. A superficial esthetical constituent prefers to an inner, deep spiritual substance, which is lost even completely.
Conventions and canons gravitation and lack of brave experiment/search reveals strictly against a background of secular art. This art is more opened to actual problems and new tendencies of nowadays and it develops more intensive. Numerous experiments and actual world innovations assimilation in different kinds and ways of modern secular art reveals itself in rising into a new quality level.
It is a wide cooperation between artists of different countries who are using different local traditions and also numerous parallels between visual and other kinds of art and this is what may help and may be important in changing this situation and a peculiar actualizing of sacral art.
As to international co-operation. First of all we would like to mention the importance of the cooperation with Polish artists, because Polish visual art holds a high place in world modern art space, staying faithful to own traditions. The other significant fact is that Poland remains a state with strong religious traditions in spite of all openness to world. All this facts influenc positively a modern Polish art environment.
As to connections with other kinds of Art, numerous parallels with modern sacral and religious Music development are very important. Stylistic and technical innovations often moved from social sphere to paraliturgical, religious and later to sacral liturgical genres.
A definite fear is present in a sacral art mostly in artists environment involved into a sacral art while coming through a borders of old canons (though it doesn’t mean braking up the tradition). At the same time in a sphere of visual art, unlike music for example where we can find many paraliturgical or simply religious genres (more opened to innovations), we can hardly find equivalents. Though so cold "religious art", that comes through borders of canonic sacral art, might be the very way for creative innovations penetration to a sphere of the last [a sacral art].
So, our goal is to stimulate specific religious Art development by searching new view on meaning of Art and specially sacral Art by means of wide international creative cooperation and close relationship with other kinds of Art (music, multimedia).
